We had some interesting developments last week on the internet. We learned the that Rustock botnet is now responsible for almost 40% spam on the internet. This botnet installs on machines and then uses that machine to send out spam. It takes advantage of users who don't updates computers or don't have antivirus software installed. If you are getting emails error messages or message in your inbox from people you don't know then you might be infected. Please see our anitivirus section of the website to learn more about computer and internet safety software. We have the latest reviews on the best software for computer security.
A new rootkit called TDL3 has now started to show up on the internet. This rootkit installs on computers running the Windows 64 bit versions. It installs on computers and then can take over that machine. Currently there is no patch to fix the error but Microsoft is investigation the security threat.
Here is a big surprise a flash drive has caused the greatest security breach in history. A flash drive that was infected with malware was inserted on a computer used by the Military. The malware then installed itself on the computer which then stared to install on other computers and get information from other computers. It took some time before the threat was recognize and they were able to remove the malware. This is exactly why we here at Internet Safety Center think that the plug in play feature in Windows should be turned off for people access sensitive material.
In other news Google has announced that with Gmail you can now make phone calls. Google is offering this feature for free for the first month. After that Google plans to make it a monthly fee but have not announced how much it will cost.
This is just a friendly reminder to all parents to talk to your children about internet safety and security. Internet safety for kids starts with talking to kids and verify they understand the risk and dangers of the internet. Parents should also review all Facebook pages to verify that all information posted if appropriate and can't get them into trouble.
